Regular routine check ups are important for our health, not just our teeth, gums and mouth as a whole.
Tooth decay and gum disease are two of the most common chronic diseases.
Most dentists recommend a regular check up every 6-12 months.
Regular visits can detect risk factors so that preventative treatment and strategies can be put in place :)
Things that I'll check at these appointments include;
Oral Hygiene and diet.
Health of teeth and gums and risk of tooth decay and gum disease
Signs of tooth wear.
Habits such as teeth grinding/clenching.
Need of replacement/repair of previous dental work
In children or adolescents, I'll also check:
Habits such as dummy/thumb sucking.
Transition of baby teeth to the permanent dentition.
Growth and alignment of teeth and Jaw which may result in problems with the bite.
If you want to read something with a bit more detail, have a look at the ADA fact sheet: https://www.adansw.com.au/About/ADA-NSW-Fact-Sheet-How-Often-You-Should-See-a-Dent.aspx :)
